The Doing Business in Memphis Guide to the Standard Industrial Classification.   (SIC) Code System

About the Standard Industrial Classification System

The Doing Business In Memphis Guide to the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Code is excerpted from the Standard Industrial Classification published by the U. S. Government's Office of Management and Budget. If you would like to download a copy, just click here here to go to the download link at the bottom of this page.

The Standard Industrial Classification is intended to cover all economic activities: agriculture, forestry, fishing, hunting, and trapping; mining; construction, manufacturing; transportation, communications, electric, gas, and sanitary services; wholesale trade; retail trade; finance, insurance, and real estate; personal, business, professional, repair, recreation, and other services, and public administration.

This index was developed to classify establishments by the type of activity in which they are engaged. The purpose of the Code is to facilitate the collection, tabulation, presentation, and analysis of data relating to business and commerce. As such, it promotes uniformity and comparability in the presentation of statistical data collected by various agencies of the U.S. Government, State agencies, trade associations, and private research organizations.

To be recognized as an industry, the group of establishments constituting the proposed classification must be statistically significant in the number of persons employed, the volume of business conducted, and other measures of economic activity.

What is Included In This Guide

The Doing Business In Memphis Guide to the Standard Industrial Classification Code includes those Divisions and Major Groups of the SIC Code that correspond most closely to the business categories included in the Doing Business In Memphis directory. This includes businesses fitting the SIC Divisions of: Construction; Manufacturing; Wholesale Trade; Retail Trade; Finance, Insurance and Real Estate; and Services. These categories cover the Major Groups 15 through 89. Other break-out areas of the directory are Technology; Transportation and Logistics, Professionals, and Non-Profit and Religious. These also will be found in the major SIC code groupings.

How This Information Can Benefit You

These Codes can help you more easily narrow your focus of research. If, as a sales or marketing professional, you are trying to reach a certain industry group as a whole, and you can not do so by knowing the business name only, the the SIC code could help you. If you want to target florists, for example, many business names exist that may or may not tip you off as to what they do. If their name is a Tiger Lilies, they may or may not be a florist. (They might be a children's dress shop!) But, if their SIC code is 5992, then you know they are a florist. Using this SIC Code Guide will save you time and allow you to prospect more efficiently.
